Hi y'all!
I had a chat with a nice EA support guy (Harshdeep), because I couldn't use my two joysticks on the same time.
I was later told that Battlefield 3 only supports one joystick at a time. *sadface*
I was then browsing the forums, and I found out that most people with joystick couldn't get their joysticks to work.
The EA tech gave me five (more or less messy) steps on how to install your joystick without problem.
I have had this problem too.
I cleaned up the steps, added some personal experience and will now present how you get your joystick to work:
(Please do remember that the EA guy told 90% of the stuff that stands here!)

STEP ONE:

Uninstall ALL of your joystick drivers, unplug your joystick.
If your computer asks you to reboot, do so.

STEP TWO:

Load CAMPAIGN mode. Then go to OPTIONS.
Navigate to the KEY BINDINGS tab.
Go through ON FOOT, IN VEHICLE and COMMON controls and clear out ALL JOYSTICK settings/buttons/axis.
This will take some time, but it is necessary for this to work.
Set KEYBOARD and MOUSE settings as you see fit.

STEP THREE:

Go through IN JET and IN HELICOPTER and clear out EVERY SINGLE BUTTON AND AXIS for KEYBOARD, MOUSE and JOYSTICK.
I know. This is fairly annoying, and I hated every single second I wiped out the bindings. -.-'

STEP FOUR:
Once you have cleared out the settings as indicated in step two and three, exit Battlefield 3.
Now install your joystick drivers from the discs that followed with your joystick, or download and install them from the official sites. Update if necessary.
Insert joysticks in ports when required.
Now calibrate using Windows, or whatever software is necessary for your joystick.

STEP FIVE:
Start up the Battlefield 3 CAMPAIGN.
Go to OPTIONS, navigate to the KEY BINDINGS tab.
Go to IN JETand set your KEYBOARD buttons and MOUSE buttons/axis as you see fit.
Now go to IN HELICOPTER and do as you just did with the jet controls.
Now you can finally bind your joystick button/axis as you see fit.

STEP SIX
Guess what?
You're done!
Now go join a server with jets and helicopters, and try out the controls.
Do improvements (if required), or just game until your joystick breaks.
Or.. For the love of DICE, stop before that. You gotta get something to eat too.

I hope this little tutorial have helped you out.

As I said before, I also chatted with a EA tech, about support for multiple joysticks to be used at once.
He told me that it wasn't supported.
So I created a getsatisfaction.com thread about it. (http://getsatisfaction.com/battlefield3/topics/double_joystick_support [getsatisfaction.com] )

And that is all I have to say.

No wonder mine wasn't working properly. However, this is simply unacceptable for a 60$ game that had both an Alpha and a Beta (which I tested both, and my joystick worked semi-fine in Beta). Since when was this "quality?" Move the deadline if there's going to be this many ridiculous issues. You might have a few people whine, but it's better that than lose customers to bad press.

you seem to miss that EA wanted to get it out the door before CoD. which seems logical, if they released it a month later a lot of CoD people wouldn't have bought the game.

Thanks for the help this sort of work for me i did the above steps but i didn't bother to delete the key bindings in jet & heli
i only delete the joystick setting
I then reinstall my saitek cyborg force drivers & low & behold i could fly with my joystick YAH
But then i reinstall my logitech G13 gamepad drivers now i am back to no joystick working :(
even tho i can still see my joystick setting in BF3
So my problem is that BF3 will only see my G13 game pad & not my joystick when i have them both installed
I never had this problem in BF2 COME ON DICE GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER

P.S. I work out way to get both my G13 & Joystick to work This is a bit of a pain to do but it works
I start BF3 with my joystick plug in + my G13 plug in i shut down my G13 software before i join a BF3 server once i am in the game i alt tab out restart my G13 software alt tab back in the game & all is good this keeps on working until i change servers
i hope this helps

Horrible guide.

Better advice: Get a joystick that has its own mapping software and forego the hassle of deal with DICE's incompetence. Save's a lot of headache. Saitek makes great flight systems.

The thing is EA tech support sux just about every BF game i have owned has had joystick issue & every time EA tech support has been useless
i have always had to solve theses problems with the help of the gaming community
Also i bet some low level EA tech support will read theses forums so when the next person with joystick problems contacts them they will use theses fixes & take the glory for the fix with no acknowledgement to the gaming community that fixed this problem
This is typical of EA once they have your money & only small number of gamers have a problem with a game EA don't give a SHIT
