I think you have to add the bf3.exe and launch the game using steam, this will take you to battle log and should work from there... However I'm not entirely sure as its been awhile since I did it.

Add origin to your steam list and launch it then just join a game and it will work

I figured it out. I use chrome and I added chrome as a non steam game. So, then I changed the name to Battlefield 3 in properties. Now all I have to do is launch chrome with steam when I wanna play BF3 and it shows up as I'm playing BF3 in steam.

Add Origin by saying Add a non-steam game. Since BF3 needs origin running it will allow u to take pics and such with the steam overlay. I've done this since the game came out so it works. To add it, add Origin to non-steam game, and rename is BF3, and you will be able to use the steam overlay if you don't have origin running before you launch

You've got to add origin to steam, not BF3. Once you do that you must launch Origin through steam. If Origin is already launched and you try to "start" it with steam it will NOT work. Simply add origin to steam, run origin from steam, and when you start a game of BF3 you will be able to use the steam overlay.

Also I believe (not 100% sure because I did it so long ago) you have to disable origin overlay in game and I don't remember where you do that, it's probably on the origin client itself.

You can have both origin and steam overlay on but just have them as differnt key bindings
