Bullets: Why so slow?

I recently looked up the bullet velocities for BF3 weapons on Symthic.com and the velocities don't seem to be quite on par with the real life counterparts. For instance the M40A5 has a very low velocity of 490m/s, the average 7.62x51mm NATO fires at around 820m/s. I'm just wondering why the velocities are so low across the board, is it for a reason?

DICE wanted to (overly) exaggerate bullet velocities. However, I'm disappointed in how many of the bolt-action rifles have very low muzzle velocities.

want to talk about slow? look at the velocity of the AT rockets in mid flight!!

So it's just a matter of DICE not doing their homework then? Balls to that...

for some reason dice is scared of the recon class becoming overpowered so they have done every thing in there power to make sure that does not happen, hense the low velocity for all the bolt actions.

It's not just the bolt actions though, take for instance the M16A3, average bullet velocity with standard barrel = ~925m/s, BF3 velocity = 650m/s

Yeah the AT rocket must be made of lead and propelled by bottle rockets... lol

One that I found that was increased was the SCAR-L. IRL it shoots 600 RPM but on here its 620, so I think some guns they decided to fuck the velocity and other parts and some they decided to love.

and this thread is supported by MW3 players, who enjoy laser guns better than machine guns.

I'm all for realism, that's why I brought this up. Besides, MW3 should not even be brought up if we're talking about physics.

it's for balance, if the guns had the real life velocities they would have almost no drop at the ranges people generally snipe in game

Some guns have low rate of fire and slower then a rpg round. It's for cheaters balancing act. So EA makes more money from their hack sites. lol

It's not a question of being overpowered though, all gun velocities are doped down, assault rifles, LMG's, SMG's, everything.

Rate of fire and muzzle velocity are two different things;
Rate of fire=rate at which bullets are fired one after another
Muzzle velocity=speed of the bullet

most real life exchanges happen at 300 yards plus, so even though battlefield is massive compared to other FPS out there, everything is scaled down, so less velocity allows for more bullet drop effect in the small scale game, im not saying weapons would be OP, but an assault rifle would reach out just as good as snipers do now, which would throw off balance

The low bullet velocity is so you can calculate bullet drop and so you don't die extremely fast at longer ranges.

Currently LMG's and sniper rifles have the highest bullet velocities in the game.

BTW,the higher the muzzle velocity a weapon has in-game the less bullet drop it has.So choose a gun with a high muzzle volicity and a heavy barrel if it can be added to get the least amount of bullet drop on a gun.

Also the battlefield is much smaller compared to real life, does anyone even use the 6x scope on assault rifles or the 12x scope on the Scar-L?

(the Scar-L has a 12x scope by default btw)

Suppressors decrease muzzle velocity but are no longer weaker at range after a patch.

I see your point and agree to some extent, but it would seem like people would want to be able to engage targets at distance reliably regardless of class. That way they stand a better chance at surviving an encounter with a sniper, like me lol
