Hi guys,

I have been having a problem with BF3 since I installed Windows 8 x64 (RTM, TechNet Sub). It seems my memory (16gb) keeps topping out even though BF3 reports low memory usage. The issue only happens when I run BF3, with the memory climbing the longer I play (after about 30 minutes it tops out and turns to PowerPoint as it flogs the page file on my SSD).

Here is a screenshot of my memory usage - http://i46.tinypic.com/16kpc8i.png [i46.tinypic.com]

Here are my processes sorted by highest usage - http://i45.tinypic.com/29x6ttw.png [i45.tinypic.com]

I basically have very little else running, with BF3 closed my memory usage usually sits around 16-17%.

Memory leak?? I also have a Radeon 5850 with latest Catalyst (12.8) installed and an Intel i5 2500k. BF3 used to run beautifully on Windows 7 (same machine).

Cheers!

BF3 does not support Win 8. Why are you guys surprised it has problems with it? Hence why the OP says that it runs beautifully on Win 7, because it was designed on it.

I never experienced a problem on Win 7 x64, ran beautifully everytime I played it. It runs well for a while until my memory tops out and then it's unplayable until I reboot my computer to release the memory. Not even closing BF3 releases the memory which is why I suspect a memory leak either with the game or, perhaps, the video drivers...

2 of my close friends have recently installed Win 8 and are having the same problem. Especially when playing the Armored Shield map. One of them is very clued up on PC's and as far as I know, there wasnt a fix he could come up with. Ill ask him when he is awake and if he came right I will post again.

^^Nolatork^^ might just have the best solution right now..

I have the same problem sometimes, but not always and that's weird.

On a side note, why do you have internet explorer in your task manager?

I hope this was a missclick.

Thanks guys (the helpful ones) - I run Chrome/Firefox as well but IE10 is perfectly fine (I do web design so I use all the browsers for testing, IE is still my default browser though). Currently Battlelog is the only thing open in IE, but IE is not the issue.

I would revert to Win7 but I actually prefer Win8 as apart from this BF3 issue it's faster at everything else I do - I'm also a network admin at a school so I know a few things about PCs myself, however, this has currently got me stumped until I have some more time to look at it in more detail. So far, nothing in the logs and my memory is still sitting at a steady 97% utilisation even though I closed BF3 about 30 minutes ago.

Appreciate the help, no point reinventing the wheel if someone has come across it and solved the issue (might also go towards helping others in the future).

UPDATE - Seems I would not be alone and the issue seems to point to AMD drivers - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/windows-8-bf3-ati-memory-leak-or-so-it-seems/de507ad1-7832-4a5e-a7b7-6261aa3f45be [answers.microsoft.com]

EA Support in Germany told me: Win 8 is not supported, so we will not help anyone using Win 8 or release a patch for memory leak problem.

So I have to install Win 7 again only for BF3. :-(

Dude that really sucks. I also installed Win8 x64 recently but haven't had the same issue. Mine runs perfectly fine (touch wood). Hopefully AMD will fix the problem sooner rather than later...

frekase, that's okay I can understand their take on it but so long as they know that come October 26th when Win 8 hits GA they might just have a shit storm on their hands. I can deal with it for now and just hope they fix it once GA hits. Just trying to help them be proactive, they can't bury their heads in the Win 8 sand forever!

KRayn3r, ya lucky bastard! Hehe! Do you have an AMD or NVidia card? I'm actually thinking about buying an NVidia card (my 5850 is getting a bit long in the tooth anyway) - so far I haven't anyone with this problem who is running NVidia...

UPDATE - Just going to try out these 12.9 beta drivers - http://benchmark3d.com/amd-catalyst-12-9-9-00-august-15 [benchmark3d.com]

Cheers guys!

Yeah I do, a MSI 560Ti Frozr II. If you are looking to upgrade I can highly recommend the MSI 670 Frozr. I have recommended it to two of my friends and they are both very happy with the card. It has an awesome after market cooler which is quieter and works a lot better than stock cooling + the performance in BF3 is awesome. For some reason NVidia cards seem to run BF3 a lot quicker than their equivalent AMD counterparts...

Good luck with those drivers. I would prefer to install new drivers that would solve the problem than pay money for new hardware :-p I mean the 5850 is a little dated but still runs the game at a decent rate if you turn the settings down a bit (a buddy of mine has one).

got to say with the latest nvidia drivers, i couldnt play a complete round without the game locking up the entire pc, rolled back 2 July's beta drivers, and all is good again.
DONT DELETE THE .SB FILE. You are breaking the games ToS and risk your account being banned with NO appeal. It's not the file causing the leak, it's not your system. But there is currently NO fix, just have to wait. I2600k@4.1Ghz, 16gb, 120gb OCZ Agility 2 SSD, 12Tb Sata Mechanicals, 2x7950 x-fire, Win8.1 Pro. Well got through at least a couple hours of gameplay with no memory issues - in game BF3 took about 1.4gb and took me up to around 21% memory usage and everything remained stable. Closing BF3 saw memory return to around 16% or so, pretty much ran as expected. Those beta drivers seemed to have done the trick (touch wood) - will test some more though!

Thanks everyone!

it is most likely to leak from bf3 - gpu driver - win8 combination. probably newer drivers or hot fixes will solve this problem.
I bought Premium just for this signature thing.

I've tried Battlefield 3 with Windows 8 x64 RTM 9200 build.

I must say when it works, it works nicely - but a lot of the time it does suffer from stuttering and crashes. One particular thing I noticed, is it suffers with huge issues on Armored Kill. No hit detection, no weapon, glitching through floor for no reason etc.

Windows 8 isn't supported fully yet - so, I'd suggest using Windows 7 x64 as it's more stable. Anything higher (Windows 8 etc) will not run properly.
