Are PDWs terrible and pointless in the game?

Pretty much

They don't excel at anything, but can still be enjoyable to use none the less.

tbh I wouldn't mind having them if the PDW was a secondary weapon (instead of pistols) for recons who carry sniper rifles.

At least all of them look horrible. Reason enough not to use them.

No.

The best PDW's are used for close range fast ROF hip-firing.

MP7/MP5K + Laser + Extendo Mags.
Nerf Jets and the Jet Scrubs who fly them.

I don't think so bro.
Stats don't matter in this aspect. To be effective with the PDW you have to sneak up on somebody and then spray him with a big part of your mag, while the shotgun is a one/two shot kill from a bit closer distance.

It`s all about speed and handling.
PDW = fast shooting, accurate at close range, weak stopping power.
Shotguns = slow shooting, lower accuracy, strong stopping power.

Both weapon types are good depending on player`s skill, type of gameplay, map selection, etc.

Nah. I use both a lot and rarely does the rate of fire equate in a kill over another weapon like the m16.

All class weapons make PDW's pretty obsolete novelty weapon and with Battlefield's caliber damage model doesn't make it excel at close range over weapons that excel at long range.

That's why DICE should do some range sweet spot for every weapon

The ROF doesn't just come from the actual gun. It comes from having accurate hipfire (I suppose a better term would be "time to engage" or something), while other guns have to ADS to aim properly.

That said, I only use them in Engineer kit.

I prefer taking an MP7 as my engineer gun these days. The other kits I use other guns.

Yup.

Would allow for better weapon roles and significantly improved unique weapon balance even within the same category.

Best PDW is the AS Val with extended mags but that isn't even a PDW, It's a Assault Rifle I think.

PDWs are more effective at longer range than a shotgun, but less effective than a carbine at a bit of the middle range.. than the LMG takes over at the middle and fails to the assault rifle at the middle to long range.. than at long range comes the DMR and lastly is the Sniper rifle

I really don't understand the class weapons at all this time round. Engineers have PDWs whilst anyone can have a carbine. All the snipers are bolt action but anyone can use the spam rifles. Assault rifles have always felt so similar to carbines anyway... only the support have a properly unique weapon selection.

It's one step away from dissolving the classes entirely and letting people run around waving chainsaws at each other. We'll see if the system works though...

I guess they come with the tightest hipfire.
