THIS IS A QUESTION DIRECTED TO A MOD OR SOMEONE IN AUTHORITY

Are we allowed to include in-game swearing in our entries? By in-game I mean swearing that the soldiers say in the game. I do not mean my own swearing. I read on this page:

http://eacom.s3.amazonaws.com/Only-in-Battlefield3-Terms-Conditions-UK-US-NL-2012.pdf [eacom.s3.amazonaws.com]

that the videos had to be acceptable for ages 13 and up. Therefore, if there are a few f bombs and the other word for poop or donkey included in my video, will it still be accepted? Mind you, the swearing isn't the focus of the video, but it's just included to make it more intense.

I went on EA chat and talked with a customer service agent and he didn't know the answer. I want to know because I've put a lot of hours into my entry and I don't want it to be tossed out because of a minor issue like this.

If a mod or someone who can help sees this, would you please help direct me to someone who can answer my question. I understand that you probably don't know the answer, but I'm hoping you know who the contest judge is or who makes the rules for the contest.

Thanks,
xPickles

Pickles you mentioned that swearing was not the main focus of your video. I have a very different idea, some might call it genius but those are your words, not mine. Why don't you make the video focus on swearing? It would be bold. Edgy. It would innovate, really change things. I think the judges want something that really pushes the limits of what a gamer is capable of. This could be that entry. Just take out all of the content except the curse words and you will be transcending genres before you even go about creating them. This is it dude, this is the idea that will have the judges eating from your hand much like the urban pigeon.

Exactly! This is the main reason I'm asking. Also, I created a thread about this, but it seems to have been deleted? Maybe I'm not allowed to post in this forum. Anyways, I still haven't received an official answer and I have no idea where else to go to figure out if soldiers' swearing will be an issue.

Here are the rules that everyone was required to follow:
http://eacom.s3.amazonaws.com/Only-in-Battlefield3-Terms-Conditions-UK-US-NL-2012.pdf [eacom.s3.amazonaws.com]

I bought a video recording program to record footage then spent a week editing and tuning my video to make sure it conformed to all the rules just to find out half of the Top Ten violated the rules. I want to know my score compared to those in the Top Ten as explained in the Rules. Clearly my video (and many, many others) would have scored higher than most of those in the Top Ten. Score is based on Originality, Creativity, Appropriateness to Topic and Resourcefulness. Excerpt below:

Entry Judging. On or about Wednesday, September 12, 2012, Sponsor or its designee,
the Competition Judge, whose decisions are final and binding on all matters relating to the
Competition, will independently evaluate and judge all eligible entries received and select in
its sole and absolute discretion, the top 10 entries (collectively the, “Top Entry” or “Top
Entries”) based on rankings in the following criteria: ORIGINALITY 20%, CREATIVITY 20%,
APPROPRIATENESS TO TOPIC 30% and RESOURCEFULNESS (i.e. displaying the ability
to capture footage) 30%.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operation Teamplay violated Rule 3b:

Rule3b -
Entries submitted in this
Competition must not contain any pornography, or other illicit, illegal, defamatory, morally
offensive or obscene content, and must be appropriate for audiences at least thirteen (13)
years of age, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Sponsor, in its sole discretion,
reserves the right to disqualify any Entry containing racial, religious, or ethnic slurs, explicit
language, obscene, pornographic, violent, or sexual content, or libel, hate speech,
references to alcohol, drugs or other illicit substances, or otherwise objectionable, offensive,
illegal, inappropriate or prohibited material.

It was obscene and not appropriate for audiences of 13 years of age. If employees of Dice think that cursing like that is appropriate for 13 year olds, I challenge them to curse like that at a relatives party with young children. Be reminded 13 years old is still grade school, not even high school. Shameful. I went through every frame of my video bleeping out the chat box and soldier vulgarity, for nothing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Jackfrag's submission, it is seen that they used other people's footage to compile the video (half the footage is from Jackfrag, half from IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII). This clearly violates Rule 3b:

Rule3b continued -
Entries must pertain to BATTLEFIELD 3, as determined by
Sponsor in its sole discretion. No group, or team efforts, or multi-author(ed) designs will be
accepted in this Competition.

Spotlight of the Flanker violates this same Rule- it contains group efforts and/or multi-authored design (one person flys, another in the tank). It was clearly staged as was The Experience 2. Jackfrag, Flanker, and Experience 2 are great videos but they should be disqualified for not obeying the Rules that everyone else followed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Video submission: "What Would You Do" violates 3b by not using Competition Assets for the music. That music was neither Competition Asset nor Game Footage (Footage is defined as both audio and video).

Rule 3b continued -
By entering, entrants warrant that their Entries contain only Sponsor-provided Competition
Assets, and/or Game Footage.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rule 1 -
Entrants must follow the submission guidelines.

Rule 10:
Your continued participation in the Competition
shall constitute your continued acceptance to be bound by the Official Rules and any
modifications thereof... By participating in the Competition, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules and by any other requirements set out in the promotional material, which may be amended or varied
at any time by Sponsor, and you reaffirm you agreement to be bound by EA Online Privacy Policy and Terms of Service

I don't understand the point of the Rules if they aren't enforced. Instead of spending weeks editing footage I would have had a better chance of winning if I used copyrighted music and submitted my best 20 second clip. This contest discouraged honest work and was a slap in the face to those who worked hard to score points in all the fields required. I spent weeks rendering my movie over and over to make it perfectly sync to the Assets provided but, honestly, I don't think they watched my video. It could be used to sell the game. The only way I could have made it better was to ignore the Rules but I figured they were there for a reason. You buy a Lottery Ticket and pick your six numbers (as stated in the Rules). When they do the drawing they award $10Mil to someone with the Batman symbol. Sure, it's cool and all but you worked hard picking numbers and you did what you thought was required. Why were we purposely misled?

If one of the Disqualified Five win the $10k (in gear), I'm going to lose a lot of respect for Dice. How can you make a contest with rules and not enforce them? There are so many other videos that are better and deserve to win.

@countj I pretty confident by what they mean by "No group, or team efforts, or multi-author(ed) designs will be
accepted in this Competition." is that you can't have 2 or more people submitting the same video. Reason I say this is because.... if you think about battlefield 3, its a team/group base game and if they meant that statement in the way that your stating it, well then you might as just close the competition. There is obviously something that you are misunderstanding in your interpretation of the rules.

I agree that BF is a team based game but when I read "no group / team efforts" I think of two or more people gathering footage and making a video. For example, if I'm part of a research team, I will gather my data and give it to the team leader to combine it all. Same with "multi-authored" design - if you have two authors writing a book, you expect to see both their contributions in the pages (not two authors selling individual books containing the exact same story). The verb-age in the rules reads "no collaboration" in making the video. Two people turning in the same video would be silly.
