The 1911 was designed by John Browning in the year 1911, therefor it`s name.
It was used by the US military as the standard handgun from 1911 up to 1985. Then it was replaced by the M9.
It has been heavily used in WW 1 & 2 and in the Corean and the Vietnam war.
During warperiods USA produced about 2,7 million M1911`s.
The 1911 is built by Colt and uses .45 caliber bullets and therefor it is also known as the Colt .45
